Entire games team on notice for redundancy as developer seeks new project partner
October 18, 2024 – Surgent Studios, the developer behind the critically acclaimed Tales of Kenzera: Zau, has put all game development on hold due to funding challenges. This move has placed the studio’s entire game development team at risk of redundancy, as they search for a partner to support their next project.
The announcement was made through a statement on the studio’s social media channels, where Surgent Studios expressed their regret over the situation, stating that they have “unfortunately had to put our team on notice for redundancy.” Alongside their work in game development, the studio also operates in TV and film production.
The Studio’s Journey
Originally known as Silver Rain Studios before rebranding to Surgent Studios, the company was co-founded by actor Abubakar Salim, known for his roles in Assassin’s Creed Origins and House of the Dragon. Their debut title, Tales of Kenzera: Zau, was launched under EA Originals, receiving favorable reviews from critics.
Despite its reception, the game struggled to achieve commercial success. As a result, in June 2024, just three months after the game’s release, Surgent Studios laid off over a dozen employees in an effort to cut costs.
What’s Next?
Following the release of Tales of Kenzera: Zau, the team began working on a new, darker, and more intense prototype. However, this project remains on hold as the studio searches for financial backing. Surgent Studios has assured fans that updates for Zau are still on the horizon, even as they face these challenges.
