Let’s Play the Right Way

“Let’s play the right way” isn’t about limiting creativity or passion—it’s about understanding how esports should be played in a healthy, professional, and structured manner. It means creating standards that protect players’ long-term wellbeing, improve performance, and present esports as a serious, organised sport.

This conversation has gained attention as a growing debate in esports highlights how close some professional gamers sit to their monitors during competition. While the practice is often defended as a way to improve focus and immersion, experts and observers are raising valid concerns about player health, professionalism, and broadcast quality.

From a health perspective, sitting extremely close to a screen for long periods can increase eye strain, neck and back issues, and poor posture over time. Just as traditional sports rely on rules and regulations to protect athletes’ long-term wellbeing, esports must also adopt clear standards that encourage healthier playing habits rather than normalising risky ones.

Beyond health, there are important structural and professional considerations. Sports thrive on rules that define how games are played. Without clear guidelines on player setup—such as screen distance, seating posture, and overall ergonomics—esports risks inconsistency and long-term harm, especially for players who begin competing at a young age.

The issue also affects broadcasting and production. When players sit inches from their screens, cameras struggle to properly capture facial expressions and reactions—key elements that help audiences connect with competitors. Poor camera angles, lighting challenges, and limited visibility reduce broadcast quality and make it harder to deliver an engaging viewing experience for fans watching at home or online.

Importantly, this discussion is not about criticising players. Their commitment and competitive drive are undeniable. However, passion alone should not override safety, structure, and sustainability. Proper coaching, regulation, and standardised setups can preserve competitive integrity while improving player wellbeing and production value.

Most importantly, playing the right way supports a professional ecosystem—one where players, coaches, parents, and organisers understand the structure behind the game, not just the gameplay itself. When esports is played the right way, it becomes easier to teach, easier to coach, easier to broadcast, and easier for audiences to respect.

As esports continues to grow globally, the solution lies in regulation rather than normalisation—putting clear measures in place that protect players’ health, enhance broadcast quality, and support the long-term professionalism of the industry.
