James McCaffrey, the actor best known for voicing video game characters Max Payne and Alex Casey, has died at 65 after a battle with cancer. His death was confirmed by his manager, according to Variety.
McCaffrey’s voice became legendary in the gaming world, especially for his portrayal of the gritty New York City cop-turned-vigilante Max Payne in the 2001 game by Rockstar Games and Remedy Entertainment. He reprised the role in two subsequent Max Payne titles and continued his association with video game law enforcement by voicing FBI agent Alex Casey in Remedy’s Alan Wake series, most recently appearing in Alan Wake 2 released in October.
Tributes poured in from across the gaming industry. Rockstar Games honored McCaffrey as the “inimitable and commanding presence” behind Max Payne, while Remedy Entertainment expressed deep sorrow, noting his “remarkable talent” and lasting impact on the gaming community.
Although widely celebrated for his video game roles, McCaffrey also had a successful career in film and television. He starred in NBC’s “Viper” and played a key role in FX’s “Rescue Me” as firefighter James Xavier “Jimmy” Keefe.
McCaffrey is survived by his wife, Rochelle Bostrom, and their daughter, Tiernan.
